Gwapotel
THE Metro Manila Development Authority’s “Gwapotel” inn at the Port Area, Manila, is good news for workers, small-business men and transients who missed their bus to the province and must find a place to sleep in the city.
“Gwapotel” is Chairman Bayani Fernando’s name for the low-budget “hotel” on A. Bonifacio Drive that offers sleeping space (P20 a night) and showers (P5 for eight minutes) to men and women who may be too tired for the long trip home or who spent hours waiting for a ride that did not come.
The inn is the rebuilt National Power Corp. Building on the famous strip. Separate quarters with double-bunk beds for men and women are available. Cheap breakfast and brunch at the canteen are among the amenities.
What are missing in the hostel? No bed sheets and pillows “to discourage persons from staying permanently.” We do not know if the place is air-conditioned.
Still, the MMDA promises guests that the place is safe, comfortable and—of course—affordable. The authority has boldly predicted that the lodging house could reduce traffic in Metro Manila by “65 percent” with heavy occupancy by province-based visitors.
The concept is not new, of course. Private businessmen in Tokyo have built similar facilities for travelers living outside the capital and for the inebriated salarymen who could not make it home. The Tokyo facilities are tomblike structures built on top of the other. A guest has to squeeze himself in the cubicle and sleep off the night or his alcohol. A built-in TV set compensates for space. Showers are available.
The four-story bed-and-shower project was inaugurated on May 1, when workers were expecting good news from the government. They did not get a salary increase but they got a temporary sleeping place for the night, courtesy of the MMDA.
